Every successful organization looks for ways to elevate talent in it’s workforce. If you own a company, do you do this? You should because it will make your company more productive and you’ll see your organization grow faster over time. There are many ways to elevate talent in your workforce. However, I would say your first step is to identify it. Recognizing Talent

Recognizing talent is not as easy as you may think, it takes a keen eye to recognize talent in your workforce. Build a relationship with your employees, find out what their personal goals are, and get to know them on a personal level. You will be glad you did, it’s important to get to know your employees and find out more about them. If your employees express interest in a certain area of your business, take note of it. Try to see how you might be able to include them in that area of the business. Don’t let them jump right in, it’s better to ease them into an area of business. Let them know the job they were hired to do is the most important job for them right now and that they’re highly valued in the company.

Develop Skills

Encourage your employees to learn new skills. If one of your employees wants to get their Masters Degree, encourage him/her to do so. If you own the company, pay 50% for him/her to get their Masters Degree. You want to invest in your employees because they are investing in you. If they have other career goals, take note of them and see how you can make them happen. For example, if you have a number of web developers working for you encourage them to learn more programming languages. Codeacademy is a great website for this and there are plenty of other similar sites. If you have employees who like social networking, try to get them involved with the company’s social media efforts.

Multiple Roles

Let employees know when you want them to take on multiple roles. This should usually be done once they have a bit of experience in the company and are familiar with the day to day operations and the way the company works. Try to align these roles you want them to undertake with the employees interests. This way they will be motivated and work harder within the role. If you think a talented employee would be good at a certain role, encourage them to get involved with that part of the company. Let them know you think they could make a difference if they are to help out within that part of the company. Don’t overwork your employees, but empower them to fill many different “hats” in the organization.

Make sure you communicate clearly and effectively with your employees. Let them know there are opportunities for advancement in the company and there is a clear path to get there. If you want to do this the right way, show your employees the path to get there. Tony Hsieh does this very well with Zappos, I recommend his book Delivering Happiness which is a fantastic read on business and life. Let your employees know they are valued, set up regular outings, put together recognition programs, and acknowledge specific achievements in a group setting. When employees are ready to be promoted, let them know and announce the promotion to the company.

Try to make sure you keep employees at your company, you should try to keep your workers in place at your company. You’ve probably invested a lot of time and energy in them as they have with your company. The best companies have little to zero turnover because they recognize hard work, talent, and aim to keep their employees satisfied. Some companies have perfected this strategy and been able to keep their turnover rate less than 3% like Google, Zappos, Cisco, Intel, etc. Make sure your employees are satisfied with their jobs and if they’re not find out ways you could make things better for them. It’s important for you to surround yourself with the best talent you can find.
