Brand New Traders

If you are brand new to trading futures or trading futures with prop firms then you MUST start here. I was new once as well and let me tell you there is a steep learning curve and learning to trade is not as easy as it may seem.

Most people think trading is just moving a mouse and clicking buttons but truly it is not that easy. Maybe the actual trade execution is easy but there is so much more to it than just clicking your mouse and gambling your way to success. Sure you may get lucky a time or two but simply put that is gambling and not actually trading.

To be a trader you have to find an edge and you have to manage risk. More on this later...for now lets get down to the basics.

What Are Futures

Futures are derivative contracts that obligate a buyer to purchase, or a seller to sell, a specific asset (like a commodity or financial instrument) at a predetermined future date and price. They are used for hedging (protecting against price fluctuations) or speculating on future price movements.

Some of the more popular futures contracts are Nasdaq, ES, Crude Oil, Gold and Platinum. These are traded on brokerages with margin which allows you to use smaller amounts of capital leveraged to earn even more capital.

Futures contracts expire and change ever so often but your broker will update you as that happens. Currently we are on NQ1! June 2025 and in June it will roll forward to the next contract.

You don't really have to fully understand this but I think it is a good idea to understand the market as a whole before trading in it. That is why I am including this information. I am still learning things everyday as a day trader that has been trading for over a year consistently. I am sure you will also.

Futures are regulated by the US government which makes them better than forex or other outside markets. Yes, forex brokerages are regulated if they want to allow US traders but they have a ton of slippage and sometimes I feel like they control and manipulate price. That is another topic for another time.

Personally I started trading stocks unleveraged then moved into forex pairs USD/JPY for example then later found futures. I was profitable trading forex but I just could not stay profitable for some reason. When I found the futures market I was in awe. The movement and volatility was such a better experience. I could literally print money. My first few days trading I scored a $2k to $3k winner not knowing what I was doing and that hooked me.

I mostly trade Nasdaq minis and micros which is NQ1! E Mini and MNQ1! Micro.

When you are on an NQ1! mini chart each point is $50 up or down. You profit $50 or lose $50 depending on your position. Example: I am long on the NQ1! at $19,000 and it moves up $1910 then I am in the green or profiting $50 for that 1 point move.

On a micro contract MNQ1 it is $5 per point. Micros are great for beginners as you are not as leveraged meaning you loose less with larger market sweeps but also do not profit as much. You can make a significant amount trading micros. I have had $1,500 profitable micro trades many times since I have started. 7 micros is like trading 1 mini contract. You can trade more than one lot size at a time or as we like to call them contracts. Typically I am trading 1 to 3 minis at a time sometimes more depending on the setup.

Futures like the Nasdaq are many stocks in one. They are index funds which have hundreds of small and large cap stocks dictating price.

Live Trading Example

The video below is me making many trades working to pass a funded trading evaluation account to be funded. Ignore the concepts just watch the trades I make to see how the market moves and live trades in action.

The market likes to repeat itself and it makes sweeps up with several candles and down with several candles. Sometimes you will see large long or short candles.

How And Why Trade Prop Firms

Prop firms are here to offer a way to get into the market without investing your own capital. To start you will purchase an evaluation account or test account. Once you are set up with the test account you will then trade to pass the test. There is always a profit target and specific rules you have to follow but for the most part it is fairly simple to pass these evaluations. The evaluation is a sim account or also known as a paper trading account. You are not trading in the actual market however it looks and feels like you are.

Once you have passed the evaluation you will then become a funded trader. This means that you can now withdraw profits once you reach the profit target or buffer which is set by the prop firm you are trading with. I recommend starting with a cheaper evaluation like Apex Trader Funding. You have to trade 8 days and make at least $50 each day but your profit target for the $50k funded account is $2600. Once you reach this target you can withdraw your profits. I recommend waiting and building up a nice buffer because if your account reaches the drawdown you will lose the account and have to start over.

The video below will help you to better understand how the evaluation accounts work and more information on the buffer.
